For years, Gmail dominated email through browsers, but its dedicated Windows app finally brings the same sleek experience to your desktop, no more wrestling with tabs or slow loading.
Google took its time refining this one, evolving from the basic “Offline Gmail” days to a full-fledged app that blends the best of the web with desktop convenience.
Whether you’re managing multiple accounts or just want lightning-fast search, this app promises to streamline your inbox. But does it deliver? Let’s explore it.
Want Gmail as a standalone app on your desktop? Easy. Google doesn’t offer a traditional download, but here’s the slick workaround everyone uses:
- Open Microsoft Edge or Chrome (Yes, it works in both).
- Go to Gmail.com and log in, or click on the above Download Button, at the top of this page.
- Click the three dots (⋮) in the top-right corner → “Apps” → “Install Gmail”.
- Hit “Install”—it’ll pop onto your desktop like a regular app (even pins to your Start menu).
What is Gmail App?
Picture this: your Gmail inbox, normally stuck in a web tab, now living on your Windows PC like a regular app. That’s the Gmail App for Windows in a nutshell.
It’s not an official Google-made program – don’t get your hopes up for that – but a clever workaround using tools like Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) via browsers such as Chrome or Edge.
You sign into Gmail, set it up as a desktop shortcut, and boom, it opens in its own window, feeling like a real app. It’s there to help you read, write, and sort emails without juggling browser windows, plus it can ping you with notifications when new mail rolls in.
Think of it as a bridge between Gmail’s online world and your Windows setup—simple, practical, and built for everyday use.

Changelog - What's new in version 3.64.1
## Changed- Meru names itself to websites as Meru and Electron again, instead of presenting itself as Chromium, because Google refused to sign in new accounts when it did. `Settings… → Advanced → Miscellaneous → Use default user agent` is gone with it, since there's nothing left to switch back to.
## Fixed
- Adding a Google account works again. In 3.64.0, Google answered "Couldn't sign you in — This browser or app may not be secure" after the email address. Accounts that were already signed in were never affected and stay signed in.
